So we were at my grandfather's house on Sunday and one of the highlights for our kids is playing in his wonderfully, fabulous backyard which is so full of exciting things that makes any kid smile. Swings, birdbaths, rocks, huge shade trees that (when I was Finley's age) used to have a tire swing in it. Of course, the swing is long gone now but if you look closely, you can still see a ribbon of string way up there which is the only proof really that the swing ever existed... Anyway, my kids absolutey love to play back there and Finley is always discovering creatures that she examines, ohs and ahhhs over then gently places back in it's environment. She is what her kindergarten teachers last year dubbed "Nature Girl" at school for her love of just about anything that moves (or doesn't).
So, we are in the backyard still enjoying what God has created when we come upon a Grandaddy Longlegs. I am observing from a distance, watching Finley observe the spider when all of the sudden, out of nowhere comes a little foot, adorning a brown Croc which swiftly squashes the poor spider quite dead.
You see, here is the differences between Finley and Maxton...If it is moving, Maxton stomps on it. If it looks like it could possibly move, he stomps on it. If it looks like it has been dead quite a while...He steps on it, then carries it around in his hand. All the while having such compassion for the thing. "Ohhhhh, dead bug." He will then proceed to carry it into the yard looking for a safe place to put it so he can find it the next day just to carry around again...The differences between our children are so vast yet always amazingly close that I am always amazed.
So, as always, I am hoping my posts will keep you up to date as to what is going on in our sleepy yet never boring lives!
